Groundbreaking housing case…..

Groundbreaking housing case…..

I am not a housing lawyer but….here is a report of a recent Supreme Court case

Two things about this caught my eye. The main substance of the case – ie acknowledgment that welfare benefit rates are at subsistence level so cannot reasonably be expected to meet shortfalls in rent (linked to the whole issue of HB not being in line with actual rental charges) . The fact that it was such a battle to get the case funded by Legal Aid- shocking. It will be interesting to see the impact of this case for people evicted for arrears and seeking housing from local authorities- not sure how that will pan out as there aren’t enough houses to go round atm – even with people being deemed intentionally homeless if they haven’t met rent shortfalls from benefits… hmmmmm
