Throughout the past 12 months we have all had to make significant changes to the way we live, learn, work and socialise.
During the pandemic there have been a number of national and local initiatives in place to help us adjust and get through the changes we have had to make to our normal lives. These schemes have included; furlough funding to help staff employers retain staff while businesses are close, ensuring all homeless people had off street shelter during the winter months and an amnesty on the eviction of tenants who have been unable to pay rent during this period.
As things start to open up again after our third lockdown, some of those ‘safety net’ schemes have or will be wound down, increasing pressure on us all to get our personal finances on a secure and sustainable footing.
Providing shelter and secure accommodation is a priority for us all. For many, the protection of not being evicted for defaulting on rent during the pandemic was a relief and welcome support. But as life begins to get back to some kind of normal, landlords and mortgage lenders will be looking to recoup any unpaid rent/mortgage as soon as they are able, which will put pressure on many families.
Citizens Advice Kingston provides free confidential help and advice on housing issues for tenants and home-owners. We have been working throughout the pandemic and remain open to support and advise anyone who is:
- Unsure who is responsible for repairs
- Finding it difficult to get their deposit back from a landlord
- Does not know if they need to speak with a landlord or a mortgage advisor
- Needs advice on rent arrears
- Experiencing problems with neighbours.
If you, or someone you know is a tenant or a home-owner (the service is not available for landlords), has a concern about their accommodation, please get in touch as we are here to help.
Of course, we do not only provide information on housing issues, we are here for you whoever you are and whatever the problem. Remember, we have had to make changes in the way we work too, so you need to contact us online or by telephone and we will arrange for one of our advisors to contact you as soon as they are available.
